Nose to Nose: A Memoir of Healing Introduced
It is a book about healing. After
experiencing an illness while in Switzerland, the
author, Barry Schieber, finds a Bernese mountain dog,
Moritz. As is often the case, he did not realize how
profoundly Moritz would change his life.
The book describes their experiences together while
visiting a local Montana hospital as a pet therapy team.
(Barry, by the way had never planned on having a dog and
had, to date, avoided hospitals entirely.) Written in a
simple style, the book captures the intimate moments
between Moritz and the patients over a nine month
period. The story is compelling as the reader comes to
appreciate the therapeutic role of pets in the healing
process, in this case, both for the patients and for the
author himself. It is a book that will be enjoyed over
and over again, and can be given as a gift as it is both
enjoyable and touching.
Barry Schieber, the author, is a graduate of the
University of California, Berkeley and has been an
investment advisor and Dean of a Buddhist Institute. He
and Mortiz currently live in Western Montana.
