Moritz Knows |
|
|
Moritz and I visited an
elementary school in Kalispell.
We received a large reception of gracious children and
caring teachers and adults. I read A Gift to Share
and was surprised how much everyone liked it as well as
how much I had forgotten about the book. I thought to
myself this is a good book.
I spoke of Moritz' awareness, his sense of appropriate
action, of how one really needs to pay attention to him
as his action is subtle. He was not a dog to do tricks
and entertain...he was something else.
As the first group was leaving and the second line of
children was coming into the library Moritz jumped up
and headed to the door. His speed and determination made
me think another dog was in the doorway or hallway.
But there was a teacher and a child and no dog. I called
him back and he returned, albeit mobbed by the kids.
As we were cleaning up at the conclusion a few teachers
were speaking about what had happened and one teacher
began to cry. She said Moritz had come directly to a
child in the hallway who was having some emotional
difficulties. Evidently, she was really having troubles.
Moritz went straight to her. The girl was taken back and
delighted.
I told the teachers this is Moritz, one must pay
attention. I asked what else had occurred but the
teacher said it was so fast, but she would ask the
child.
Being with the children, reading the story and seeing
Moritz do his work reminded me of the meaning of our
books. I believe the message comes across through the
illustrations, the design, the words or more likely the
whole essence when one sees our books.

Moritz and Barry often receive
letters from readers, patients and teachers who have
been affected by Nose to Nose and pet therapy.
